Quick tip: Check the toilet and shower as soon as you arrive

After arriving at a hotel, it is tempting to turn on the air conditioning, change into comfortable clothes and relax. But the writer has more than once done all that, only to discover that the shower had no hot water.

Before settling in, check that the toilet flushes and that both hot and cold water work in the shower. If something is wrong, tell reception using the phrases above. If another room is available, the hotel may be able to move you.

Check that towels and other amenities are provided, and that the drinking water—often 500–600 ml mineral-water bottles—is there. Once you have checked the basics, you can relax.

Some hotels have few power outlets. If you travel with several devices, a power strip or extension cord rated for Thailand’s nominal 220V supply may help. Check the ratings of all devices and avoid overloading outlets.

Important: Do not assume toilet paper can be flushed.

Because plumbing varies, many places in Thailand ask guests to put toilet paper in the bin provided beside the toilet rather than flush it. Follow the signs and hotel instructions to avoid a blockage.
